Why do you Homeschool?

Published by Melanie Derrick at 12:21 pm under homeschool

I’m taking a survey. Why do you Homeschool? It may have been done before, but not by me. I am curious why others homeschool. Please let me know your thoughts. Please share a couple of your main reasons why you choose to homeschool. I will post the results at a later date. I think this should be fun and interesting. If nothing else it may help someone remember why their family chose to homeschool. =)

    Why I homeschool?
    Several reasons…
the biggest is my daughter requested it, for the past 2 years.
Number two is that my daughter is a special needs child. She needs lots of focused attentions while learning and it seems the schools cut programs that she needs because of economic crisis. Plus, she was miserable at conventional school, often coming home sick because of the day’s stress.
My third reason I homeschool is our lifestyle. I’m also a musician and this means late night rehearsals (ever try to sleep w/ music going on in your home, or get to school early the next day when you stayed out late with mom while she rehearsed.?) Plus, my daughter can explore her artistic self more w/o the limits of a bedtime (we don’t like to cut a song off in the middle, why stop a work of art?) and be free to focus on her talents while I’m there to help make sure the basics are covered.

    Hi Terina,
Thank you for replying to my post. You are the first. I was thrilled to receive it. Welcome.
We have several reasons why we homeschool as well. We really like that each child can learn at his or her own pace on a variety of different grade levels if needed. We dealt with our public school not being willing to help our son. It was very frusterating. We are also able to spend more time as a family and have more influence with our faith and teaching good character qualities instead of the kids being influenced by others who do not share our same belief.
Thank you, again for sharing. I am excited about my new website blog. I hope it grows and can be a blessing to others. I hope you’ll visit again.
    Have a wonderful night.
    Melanie =)

Hey Mel sorry to hear about Pat losing his job. I know that must be very stressful for you but all things happen for a reason and I am sure you will be just fine. If you need to talk you know where I am.

Not knowing anything about home schooling other than the stereotypes I have some questions for you and I hope you don’t mind educating me . What are the pros and cons of homeschool v. regular school (charter school, private school or public school )?

How do you get started home schooling? What is the curriculum you follow? How do you know you are following the guidelines of public education and how do you know your kids are up to the level they need to be? I know there are times I have to review and research to answer questions my kids have. How will this affect them getting into college? Again, I know nothing about this I am curious.

Also, for social settings (bullies, teachers/peers they don’t get along with, girls(they are not icky anymore ;) , different types of personalities, different beliefs) how do home schooled kids adjust? I know the kids play sports so they probably get exposed to some situations but its in a controlled environment. Also, being in a school system, kids have the opportunity for sports, drama, music, dances, homecoming, prom, pep rallies and all these other functions that come with being a kid, How do compensate for these things?

I hope you don’t mind me asking. I am curious because I don’t think I would be able to do this, so Bless you for doing it.

    Hi Melanie,
I am responding to you from Twittermoms, it’s nice to meet you!
We are in our 4th year homeschooling, my son is 11 and my daughter is 9. We have many reasons for homeschooling and it seems like the list of benefits just keeps growing. For us, I would say the most important reason is that it’s God’s plan for our family. We love being able to provide our children a quality education and instruct them in Christian values. We used a structured, accredited curriculum to ensure they receive a complete education, and do annual assessments to monitor their progress (this is a requirement in our state). My kids and I love being able to spend our days together. I do not miss the public school environment for my kids at all, and my kids don’t miss it either. I could go on with a list…. but I hope that helps a little!

    Hi Melanie,

I have come from twitter moms! Nice to meet you!
We have been homeschooling our children, two boys 11 and 7, and our daughter, 5, for the past two years.
It was something I had always wanted to do but was afraid to take the leap. Our eldest son really made the decision for us as he was falling further and further behind and the resources weren’t there in our local, rural, school district to address his specific needs. It was so stressful as our evenings were consumed with homework, trying to keep up… we were all going nuts!
So, here we are. Our second son was in kindergarten at the time and at the head of his class. He requested to also be brought home to learn. Little girl won’t set foot in a classroom.
We are SO happy with the choice.
Working at his own pace totally turned our son around on learning and he’s now pretty much at grade level and reading, reading, READING and loving it- something I was afraid he just wouldn’t!
It also works with our lifestyle. We have a beach shack in Mexico we love to visit and the freedom works best for us!
It was great to read the responses!
